    You might receive a letter of over/under payment if:
    • Your job circumstances changed during the period covered and these can include:
    • Had a new job;
    • Used an emergency tax code for a while;
    • Worked for part of the year;
    • Worked more than one job at the same time;
    • Changed benefits
    • Made redundant
    • Become self employed
    • Took a job break
    • HMRC made a mistake with your tax;
    • Your employer used the wrong tax code;
    • Other income like investments or rental income reduced but you didn’t tell HMRC
    You will only receive a letter if you have paid too much or too little tax in the past years.
    Its best to find out why you have underpaid tax so that this is corrected. The earlier the better. Don’t put away the letter – you may get further penalties and interest charges and worst still – a prosecution. Unfortunately HMRC says it is the individual’s responsibility to check that the correct amount of tax has been paid and that their PAYE coding is correct.
    HMRC places the responsibility at your door step. You can engage a tax expert to help and iif you have left your details with us we can handle all your tax matters and you avoid the hassle of dealing with the tax office.
